Question
QUESTION: After watching your video I decided to take the plunge and order my first ever nepenthes.  I ordered a nepenthes Red Leopard and some soil and a hanging pot.  My question is can I re-pot the plant as soon as it comes or should I let it acclimate a bit first.  Due to my plant loving cat I really need it in a hanging pot out of reach otherwise it will either get chewed up or dumped over.  It's going to go in front of a west facing sliding glass door.

ANSWER: Hi Patricia,

Red Leopard is a good choice, and a fairly easy grower.  Right now is a great time to transplant.  It will have lots of time to re-adjust to it's new home and micro-climate in your house.  It will take at least a month for new pitchers to form after transplanting.  I've found that sliding glass doors are often great locations for high light plants like Nepenthes.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for your prompt answer.  I am excited to get my new plant next week.  I have had several other tropical carnivores including sundews and butterwarts and quite a nice collection of North American carnivores, but I have always been a bit intimidated by Nepenthes but watching your video made me think that this will work.  Can't wait to see how this works out.

Hi Patricia,

Glad you're going to give them a try.  When you can find that sweet spot in the house they can make truly amazing houseplants.  You have to be patient with them.  They don't grow nearly as fast as North American CP outside during the summer, but can be quite a conversation piece.

Unrelated topic:  Butterwart?  It's actually Butterwort.  Wort is leaf in Latin.  Figwort, Liverwort, Bladderwort, Butterwort, etc...
