QuestionI think I got this answered from one of the past questions, but I want to make sure. We got a round-leaf sundew at your open house this summer. Its been on our south-facing deck with lots of sun all summer, and was really happy - lots of new leaves. But toward late Sept. it started to die off. My lance-leaf sundews are just right now starting to die back. Is there something wrong with the round-leaf? Or is it just the first to go dormant?
AnswerHi Dresden,
That's exactly when North American sundews go dormant. All outer leaves will die and it will form a tiny resting bud in the middle of the plant called a hibernacula. I will remain that way until late March. Your Round-leaf sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) is doing exactly what it is supposed to.
Lance-leaf sundews (Drosera adelae) should not be dying back, and it is not a hardy sundew. It's a tropical. Where do you have it growing?
Good Growing!
