Question
I had a Frasier Island sundew that I moved out of an eastern facing window to a mantle with a CFL bulb on it at least 12 hours a day ( I didn't think it was getting enough light where it was and was too cold).  It started dying almmost immediately and no matter what I did it finally died altogether.  I have ordered a new plant from you all (same type) and I don't want it to die also.  Could my old plant have died from a sudden change in environment?  What should I do to keep the plant I get from you from dying also.  The only windows I have are east and west facing, no south facing.  It is a 26Wcfl ( what it says on the bulb, not actual output).  With this bulb how far from the plant should it be.

Hi Pat,

Frasier Island sundews are a true warm-growing tropical.  Sudden changes, and especially cold temperatures, which the entire country has had plenty of, would cause it problems.  They typical D. spatulata is a bit more adaptable.

For the winter keeping your plant under a light is the best bet.  A 26 watt CFL is fine.  It's best if it's a 6500K color temperature (Daylight).  Keep the plant about 4 inches from the plant.  If you're getting good red color and mucilage production, you have it suitable distance from the light.  If it stays pale green, it needs to be closer.  If you start with a plant that is already pale, you may get some leaf burn as it adapts.  Watch the new foliage.  If it looks good, then you're in business.
