QuestionSarracenia
QUESTION: Is this S. purpurea subsp. venosa or S. rosea? I found them at Splinter Hill Bog.
ANSWER: Hi Jesus,
That is definitely a Sarracenia rosea (or S. purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii for those of us rebelling against the splitters :). The fuzzy exterior and the big lip on the front are the indicators. If this plant has a pink flower when blooming that is the other indicator.
I forget, is Splinter Hill in the Florida panhandle?

QUESTION: It's in Alabama, but it's only about 30 minutes away from the Florida border. I live just an hour away from it in the Florida panhandle. I never thought to much about growing them but after seeing them in the wild. I have to say there awesome little tubby plants. I can't wait to grow some of my own!
AnswerHi Jesus,
S. rosea is a great plant, especially if you're in a warmer climate. They get big, and are very eye-catching. I would also say they are a lightly better bug catcher than other purpureas.
