Question
I am finding conflicting information about this...I want to take cuttings from the Poi Dog I got from you but I read that a vine cutting (if it takes) will produce a plant that grows only upper pitchers.  Is this true?  Also, for a young plant, is there a technique that will keep it producing only lower pitchers?  Thanks in advance. -Ed

This really depends on the plant and how the cutting is done.  If you the cutting is long with the tip intact, the plant will often continue growing the vine and produce upper pitchers.  If the cutting is short without the growing tip, the plant will attempt to push out a shoot along the stem.  This new shoot has a higher likelihood of producing lower pitchers.

However, some species, such as albomarginata, will produce only upper pitchers regardless of the cutting.  Some species, such as maxima, will revert to lower pitchers if the cutting is done correctly.

If you want to keep a Nepenthes producing only lower pitchers, you'll need to trim off the growing tip as the vine develops.  This will force the plant to produce a basal shoot, which will continue producing lower pitchers.  However, this technique is only good for a while.  Eventually, you need to allow the plant to develop the vine because you'll crowd out the lower portion of the plant and put it at risk for rot.
