QuestionMy 6 year old son loves growing plants with me and has always wanted a pitcher plant.I recently acquired a beautiful Asian Pitcher plant(Nepenthes)for us & we're also expecting our fist Venus Flytrap(Dionaea#& Sundew#Drosera capensis)to arrive any day now. While researching the correct way to care for our new plants I found your web site. I read every page. It is a treasure of information and has given me hope for a successful adventure with my son & our carnivorous plants. I plan on surprising him further buy ordering your tropical plant of the month program. I think watching "How to Care For your plants" DVDs will be a great way for my son to learn. Anyway, my question is regarding our winters here. We live in North Bend, on the Oregon Coast. The winters are very rainy and dark. We have vaulted ceilings, with south facing floor to ceiling windows. I plan on setting up a mini 4 teir greenhouse with artificial lighting in front of this window for my other house plants. Should I use it for the Pitcher plant, Sundew, and Venus Flytrap as well.
AnswerThank you for visiting our website. Yes, there is lots of good information on there, including our monthly video podcasts. It's not at all necessary to use a mini greenhouse to grow tropical plants. The vast majority of plants we sale adapt well as regular houseplants. As long as you have a sunny south window and remember to water your plants, you should see good growth throughout the year.
The Venus flytrap is also temperate plant and can be grown outdoors throughout the year. At our nursery, we grow them strictly outdoors. We demonstrate this in Volume 1 of the DVD series.

I also recommend reading the care instructions on our website. This will give you a good idea of our recommendations for customers. We grow the plants in the same manner that we outline on the website. The video podcasts will also show how plants look throughout the year.
