Question
My dying nepenthes
Hi, I had a question about my nepenthes plants, and am really concerned about them, because they are literally dying, in the way that they first appear like the plant at the top right, they like dehidrate, them they start to rot from the base to the top, and I have not been able to save neither the plant nor a stem cutting, I have lost a pretty green species I had, and now my red one is affected, one of them, they live under a tree in my tropical rainforest house so really don't know what is happening
AnswerThis type of systemic symptoms are typically related to root health caused by poor soil conditions (poor drainage) or soil pests, or it could be related to a plant virus. First, change the soil. Make sure the soil is well drained. Use the recipes listed in our care sheets on our main website.

When you change the soil, carefully rinse off the old soil. The roots are very fine and delicate, so be very gentle when you do so. Don't worry about removing all of the old soil. Just remove enough so that you can examine the roots. Look for any small, tiny bugs living in the soil. If you see any, spray with an insecticide. Watch our video podcast on how to do that.

Also examine the roots on your plant. You should have a wide system of roots. I suspect you might not see a wide system. If you do, part of the system might be dead, which is why your plant is wilting and shutting down.
Typically you can salvage a plant by quickly taking cuttings. However, if the cuttings also wilt and die, then it is likely a plant virus affecting the entire plant. Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do to salvage the plant if this is the case. I've seen instances of this occurring in my own collection. Even for me, there was nothing I could do to salvage them.
Viruses typically spread by pests. So if you have another plant that's showing the same signs, you should treat with an insecticide for your entire collection.
