QuestionHi experts I have an interesting question to ask you.
Just recently I bought my mom a 12 inch white moth orchid and noticed the plant was potted in pure fresh sphagnum moss.
Just like my nepenthes plant.
And a thought clicked in my mind.
Is there any way you could pot an orchid plant and nepenthes together?
I am not sure if you guys have ever heard of this but it seems like it might work since they like many of the same conditions like the lfs.
I think the two plants would look great together visually and depending on the nepenthes species used it might even start to vine up the stem of the orchid and the pitchers would mix in with the blooms.
For now I am not touching my plants but I wanted to get your opinion of this.
thanks - Matt
AnswerUnfortunately, these two plants require different media. Phalenopsis, or the moth orchid, prefers very course medium, such pure orchid bark. Nepenthes requires a medium that holds more moisture. We've experimented with growing orchids in Nepenthes medium, but the orchids always died after several months. The medium simply was too wet for the orchid. The Nepenthes, however, thrived. Orchids also require lots of fertilizer, something that Nepenthes won't tolerate if the concentration is too strong. While you can grow these plants side by side in the same windowsill, keep them in separate pots with their preferred media.
Good growing!
