sundew leaves turning black

Question
Hi. I received my Drosera anglica last week but about half of its leaves are turning black or already dead.  I it in a south window, in a tray with water.  I live in Colorado but have a humdifier in my house.  Is this just shock from delivery?

Answer
It's difficult to say what's going on, but a sudden change in environment can affect all types of plants, and sundews are no exception.  This particular sundew grows best in mild, tropical climates.  A hot day for this plant is 80?  At night, it appreciates dips into the 50s and upper 40s.  While it prefers lots of sunlight, you have to be careful not to overheat the plant.  You didn't mention what type of sunlight the plant was getting, so I can't comment on the specifics of what you're doing.  However, during very hot weather, you'll need protect the plant from scorching sunlight.  Dappled or filtered sunlight is best during hot weather.

As for humidity, don't worry about it.  We actually grow these plants in lower humidity to assist with transition.  For now, back off on the sunlight.  Again, I'm not sure exactly what type of sunlight your plant is getting, but I'm assuming it might be too strong for this heat-sensitive plant.  Keep the soil moist at all time.  (I'm also assuming that you're using low-mineral water.)

Give your plant a couple more weeks to recover.  If you need further assistance, please provide more specifics about actual sunlight, temperature and mineral content of your water.  A clear photograph of your plant might also be helpful.  This type of information can help pinpoint where the problem could be, but lets see how it does in a couple weeks with the change in lighting.

Good growing!
