leaves being chewed off

Question
I have a Sarracenia 'judith hindle' and lately i have been noticing bits of the matured leaves being chewed off no idea what is doing it and weekly spraying it with a safe and appropriate insecticide. How can i stop it and any general or specific idea of what it is?

Answer
It's likely a slug rather than an insect. Slugs will leave chew marks, while insects rarely do.  We often have problems with slugs at our nursery.

First, search around your pots for the slug.  Sometimes they will hide under leaves during the day.  If you find it, you can dispose of it to your discretion.  If you don't find any, use slug bait, which you can find at your local garden center.  Apply the bait around your pot, but not in the water or in the soil.  The bait has lots of metals, which can hamper your carnivorous plants.  As always, follow the directions indicated by the manufacturer.

There's nothing you could do for the damaged leaves.  The damage is permanent.  When you have a new set of leaves, you can cut off the damaged ones if the chew marks look bothersome to you.

Good growing!
