Bog Container

Question
I have a couple of sarracenias and flytraps and have a couple more coming in from you guys. I really want to have them in some sort of bog set up. I currently using the tray method. But I haven't found anything consistent for carnivorous plants online. I know having a pot that doesn't drain is bad but how should i approach this? I recently purchased a plastic half wine barrel. It doesn't have holes though. Should i drill some holes (and water often) or do you guys have any other suggestions? I don't want to end up killing all of my plants with a bad set up. Thanks.

Answer
You definitely need to have drainage.  Not only does drainage oxygenate the roots, it also prevents the pot from becoming a big mess of mud during times of rain.  Drill several holes about 3-4 inches from the bottom of your half wine barrel.  Make sure the holes are 1/4-1/2 inch in diameter.  The small space at the bottom will be your reservoir.  You will need to top water regularly during the hottest parts of summer.  Otherwise, just top water when the upper soil is losing its moisture.

We have an old bathtub that we converted into a bog garden.  We plugged the main drain hole and used another hole further up for drainage.  So far, we're heading into its fourth season!

Good growing!
