Question
sundew
I recently ordered a small Drosera Capensis. It is not producing any dew. I grow it in direct to partial sunlight throughout the day. It sits in standing distilled water. I live in Darlington, SC where it gets really hot orginating from spring. Please help.
AnswerThere are several factors that affect dew production. Lack of proper lighting is often the most common cause. You mentioned about direct to partial sunlight throughout the day, but based on your photo, I'm suspecting that the lighting may not be optimal. In your photo, I see the leaves are curled under, which is often caused by low light levels. How many hours of direct sunlight is your plant getting? Ideally you should give it about 4 hours of direct sunlight with bright indirect light during the rest of the day.
The plant also prefers cooler temperatures because it grows in the mountains of South Africa. Even for us, we see this plant produce less dew in the hottest parts of summer. But I'm not getting that sense from our photo. Your temperatures are still mild compared to summer temperatures, so I doubt that hot temperature is affecting your plant.
So find a sunnier window for your plant. Try a south window if possible. You may also need to wait until you see new growth before your plant produces dew again. Sometimes the older leaves stop producing dew when they change environments.
Good growing!
