sick ventricosa

Question
damage
damage
So I have a nepenthes Ventricosa that has been doing well for awhile even flowered a couple months ago. know that none of my others where going to flower in a time in which it would make pollination possible I wanted to save it the extra energy and I cut the flower off. Ever since then I have been getting this weird leaf damage on the plant it affects the new grows immediatly as the new leaf begins to grow looking almost pitted then it unfirls show brown areas all over the bottom of the leaf. It shows up on top of the leaf but is more or less located on the bottom. Its happening on both grow points. I am including a picture so take a look and tell me if ya got any ideas. It could probably use a repot since its been about a year but i didnt want to add any more stress to its life at the moment.

Answer
Thank you for uploading the photo.  That helped a lot.  The problem is completely unrelated to the flower.  The problem is caused by a very tiny insect called a thrip.  Sometimes you'll need to use a magnifying glass to see them, but the mottling on the new growth is a classic sign of thrip infestation.

You will need to spray your plant with an insecticide, either a topical or a systemic.  Either one will work, but you should spray your plant at least twice, 7 days apart.  If you use a systemic insecticide, the two applications should eradicate the infestation.  With a topical insecticide, you may need to spray weekly and douse your plant completely until you're confident the infestation is gone.

Unfortunately, the damage to the leaves is permanent.  You will need to wait for new growth before you see normal leaves again.

For information on using insecticides, watch our video podcast on the topic.
