Question
Drosera Regia
Allexperts,
I have a question about whether the Drosera Regia ,ever produces leaflets from a leaf cutting? I tried to get the leaf that I took from the Drosera Regia that I got from you back in Decemeber. I soaked the plant in distilled water for a week. Then I soaked for 15 minutes in Superthrive. Finally I put the leaf cutting on soil under some CFL lights ,and put a covering over the pot. The leaf itself is beginning to turn black from the tip.
Sincerely,
Weylin Callery
AnswerWhile many sundews propagate readily from leaf cuttings, Drosera regia isn't one of them. You'll have much better success propagating the plant via root cuttings. However, this species also takes longer to see any sprouts on root cuttings than other types of species. We generally see sprouts 6-8 weeks, whereas we would see sprouts in 3-4 weeks with the more common species. Overall, you'll need a dose of patience with working with this plant. For information on doing root cuttings, watch Grow Carnivorous Plants, Volume 2.
