Nepenthes mira transplanting browning

Question
Nepenthes
Nepenthes
QUESTION: Allexperts,

The nepenthes that I transplanted last week is having new growth browning.  Is this something to be concerned about?  The leaves of the new growth are beginning to turn brown.   I did do a 15 minute soak in Superthrive.  What is the likely cause of the new leaves beginning to brown?  I have a photo attached to the email.

Sincerely,

Weylin

ANSWER: Hi Weylin,

It looks like you're having some shock from transplanting.  Nepenthes have very delicate roots, so it's easy to damage them on transplanting depending on how you did it.  You mostly just need to give the plant time to recover, and repair any damage.  The Superthrive will definitely help with new root formation.

QUESTION: Allexperts,

Would giving the plant [N.mira] 1/4 orchid fertilizer weekly ,be beneficial to the plant?   What is the average for Nepenthes mira to recover from transplanting shock?  Thank you for time.

Sincerely,

Weylin

Answer
Hi Weylin,

The fertilizer will help.  However, I recommend only applying it as a foliar spray for about the next two months.  The roots are probably not as able to handle it as they would be normally.  Because mira is a slow grower anyway, expect a month or two to see a turn around.  Do lots of top-watering of the pot to keep the soil well oxygenated.

Good Growing!
