Nepenthes rafflesiana x sibuyanensis
for nearly a month Chicago has had unusual upper 70s lower 80s temps and i put my plants out side in direct sun and they turned a orangeish brown does that mean its dead can it over heat or burn

Answer
Hello Malcolm,

Nepenthes are mostly partial sun plants. They live under trees where they get a few hours of morning and evening sun and partial sun through the slight shade of large trees during the hottest parts of the day.

It is unlikely that the Nepenthes will die from direct sun so long as you give them some time to recover and regrow out of direct sunlight. Keep them in a bright, sunny, morning sun window or place them outside under a large tree or under some translucent shading that will shield them partially from the hottest hours of the day.

Most Nepenthes prefer temperatures around in the low 60s to mid 80s at the most. Nepenthes do like bright sun, but do need a little shading when the light becomes a bit too intense.
