large flesh eating plant at Merritt Island NWR

Question
Can you please identify the incredible carnivorous plant I discovered at Merritt Island NWR in Florida? The traps are as long as my finger, about 3 inches. The viney plant completely covers a shrub that's about 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide.

Answer
Hi Roger,

That is one impressive vine, and very ferocious looking.  Unfortunately, this isn't a carnivorous plant.  The trap thingies look like a seed pod of some kind with a very formidable set of spikes to keep animals from eating them.  I can't say that I've every seen this plant before.  I'd be curious to find out what it actually is.  I suspect it's an introduced species of some kind, probably something the state of Florida doesn't want there.

I'll see if I can do some research to see what it is.

Good Growing!
