Question
Heli
Hey guys, I bought a plant a while back called Heliamphora (nutans x heterodoxa), my question is: Is that the same as Heliamphora (heterodoxa x nutans) does it matter the oder of the names of the crosses? Here is the pick
AnswerHi Michael,
There is a technical difference in the cross. If everything is "by the book" so to speak, the first plant listed in the cross would be the female or receptive flower, and the second the pollen donator. There can be a tendency for seedlings to favor the female plant some, but this is only an observation from my own Sarracenia seedlings. If I remember my Mendelian genetics, you should have a consistent ratio of which favor which parent.
Having said all that, it's super common for the names to get transposed. You would have to ask the seller if they new, and if they bought the plant elswhere, they might not know either.
Good Growing!
