germinating lowland Nepenthes seeds

Question
Jeff,

I have a question or two regarding germinating lowland Nepenthes seeds...N. bicalcarata specifically. I use milled sphagnum moss for germinating highland Nepenthes seeds. That seems to be the preferred medium. I use a heating mat to keep the soil temp warm...about 75 degrees or so.

What would be an ideal tempertaure range for germinating highland or lowland Nepenthes seeds? Do you think that you would have to do anything differently germinating lowland Nepenthes as opposed to highland Nepenthes?? I do greatly appreciate any feedback and insight from you!

Kind regards,

Derick

Answer
Hi Derick,

As the general description of the Nepenthes infers, temperature is going to be important.  Highlanders are going to be fine in the 70's for germination, with a cool-down at night being beneficial.  Lowlanders need constant warmth.  You want them in the 80's consistently.  Most lowland Nepenthes never experience temperatures below 70F.

One other note about Nepenthes seeds.  They have a very short viability period.  It can be as little as two months.  You need to make sure seed is fresh, and sow it quickly.  I rarely will buy Nepenthes seed unless I know how old it is.

Good Growing!
