QuestionIs it possible to de fertilize miricale grow peat moss? And would eco eart(crushed coconut husk) be a good subsitiute for peat moss it is very fine like peat moss and has no fertilizer or nutriants in it.
AnswerHi Robert,
You probably could, but you would need a large supply of low-mineral water, and if you tap water doesn't fit that bill, then it would be expensive to try and leach it with any bottled water. It would easily be cheaper to just buy a bale of peat moss. Basically, you would just take the media and put a hose on it and allow water to flow over it for a couple of hours.
I've tried using coir (coco-peat, coconut fiber) and some plants are ok with it, other are not. Nepenthes are fine with it, Sarracenia do ok, but I've had bad luck with Flytraps using coir. Besides the unpredictability of the salt content, it tends to break-down faster than peat moss when used with bog species that are always wet. Some cp growers say it's fine, most stay away from it.
Good Growing!
