QuestionI gave my mother a S. rubra for mother's day and it's being grown in Port Ludlow, WA on the Olympic Peninsula. She says that every time she places the plant outdoors (in plenty of sun) that it starts to grow some bulbs on top (start of pitchers?) but then something keeps nibbling them off. Any clue what is likely eating this S. rubra?
I unfortunately do not have a photograph to include.
AnswerHi Mark,
Slugs, Slugs, Slugs. We have had such a hard time this year with them being such a wet year. Sarracenia oreophila, and hybrids of it are particularly vulnerable, but they will attack any species. I've gone through pounds of Sluggo. Protect them with copper tape, or set out bait.
Good Growing!
