Strange growth on Sarracenia

Question
Hi
I have grown sarracenias for a few years now without problem. However, this last month or so I have noticed that the pitchers are "wavy" and some dont appear strong enough to support their own weight, and are lying horizontal instead of erect. They are grown in a greenhouse with full sun for a couple of hours in the morning, then pretty much shade for the rest of the day due to a large tree over the greenhouse (in my neighbours garden!!). I water themn regularly with rainwater. I assume it may be aphids but can see absolutely no sign of them. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Adrian,

This sounds like classic lack of light.  Two hours of morning sun isn't enough for Sarracenia.  They need about the same amount of sun you would need for tomatoes or vegetables.  The weak floppy pitchers are common with low light.  You can also get wavy pitchers if watering has been inconsistent during new growth.  Sarracenia should be sitting in water at all times.  If you have an aphid problem that usually looks like twisted deformed, not just floppy, pitchers.  You can usually see aphids on the new growth also.

If you can move them to a location with full sun, 6 hours or more, you should see a dramatic turn around in new growth.

I can give you a better idea of what is going on if you send me a photo.

Good Growing!
