QuestionI planted a Scarlet Belle last summer. It did not increase much in size, but did develope a few pitchers. This spring I cut off old pitchers. I live in zone 8 all of my other sarrencia have new pitchers, most growing fairly well and others just starting new growth.
The Scarlet Belle has not grown at all. It appears to still have a root system. Any thoughts.
AnswerHello Ken,
If the roots are still creamy white and or reddish near the crown, they are alive. If the roots are brown and dry, they have died off. Each Sarracenia has its own speed of growth. I have some that came out of dormancy about the end of February. Some began sprouting a week after they warmed up, some sprouted new pitchers two to four weeks later. Each Sarracenia has its own growth rate. If the roots are alive, go ahead and keep them planted and water them well. It may be a few weeks of waiting, but eventually, if the plant is healthy, they should grow.
