QuestionI have a Hummer's Giant that I ordered from you earlier this year and its is growing in an African Violet pot. The soil mixture is 1 part peat moss, 1 parts perlite, and 1 part silica sand. Can I use live Sphagnum moss as a top dressing?
AnswerI don't recommend it at this time. The moss grows very rapidly, much faster than the Cephalotus. Within a couple months, your poor Cephalotus would be smothered by the moss! Wait until the plant is much larger before using live sphagnum as a top dressing. Of course, this will take a few years! For now, you can top dress the soil with silica sand. It will give your pot a nice, neat appearance.
Good growing!
