QuestionWe recently purchased a Drosera Spatulata and a Cape Sundew and both are doing very well to the point we are considering a transplant to a bigger pot. Would the plants survive if they shared the same pot, or is it best to keep them separated? Thanks
AnswerAlthough I have never done potted them together, I grow both Drosera capensis (the Cape Sundew) and Drosera spatulata, and I think that they would be fine in the same container. They like similar conditions and neither need a dormancy (and both should be protected from freezing), so I wouldn't hesitate to place them together in a larger pot and observe them for a year or two.
The spatulata will probably appreciate the greater amount of horizontal space in a larger pot for its many baby plants by division, and the capensis will certainly appreciate the greater depth of a larger pot in order to develop its characteristic deep and extensive root system. Although a mature Drosera capensis is a much larger plant than D. spatulata, it is not as active an offshoot producer, so it probably won't crowd the spatulata.
I think that they could both coexist in a nice, roomy pot, neither interfere with the other, and both be happy.
Best wishes and happy growing,
Steve
