QuestionHi Chris could i repot my purple pitcher plant in a 4 inch clay pot with a big hole in the bottom and a saucer underneath?
AnswerHello Ean,
Now would be the time for the plant to prepare for dormancy. Repotting would best be done in the Spring just as the plant is about to come out of dormancy (basically just as the conditions warm up past 50-60 degrees and the daylength begins to increase again).
You would need to check the size of the plant's roots and what size of pot it was in to begin with and preferably choose a slightly larger pot for it to grow into. For instance, I have a Purple Pitcher Plant that I have grown for about 4 years from seed. Each year, it progressed from a three to a four and now to a five inch pot. It is heavily overgrowing its pot and has already flowered in its third year. This indicates that I will probably need to move on to a six inch pot next spring. You can use clay or plasic pots. Both work just fine. Just make sure to have a large enough tray under the plant to hold at least 1/4 to 1/2 the pot depth in water. That would be 1-2 inches for 4 to 5 inch pots. Sarracenias really like their roots in water all the time in the growing season and moist soil all the time.
