QuestionHello, I am deciding to buy a Sarracenia ,but I can't pick which one is better suited for my climate.I live in Las Vegas Nevada it is very hot in the summer but mild in winter.I want a plant that have nice beautiful leaves through out the summer months, but be hardy enough for the hot summer months.
AnswerHi Hughes,
Best choices will be trumpet pitcher species and hybrids that come from the gulf coast. That is just about all of them except Sarracenia purpurea ssp. purpurea, S. oreophila or S. rubra ssp. jonesii. This is more of a choice based on personal preference. You can't go wrong with plants like Judith Hindle, Scarlet Belle, Sarracenia leucophylla, S. alata, S. rosea, Daina's Delight etc...
I recommend buying your plant in the winter so it can acclimate to your climate before the brutal summer heat arrives. We have a full chapter in our volume #1 DVD on growing in desert climates: http://www.cobraplant.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=38&products_id=...
