QuestionHi Steve,
a follow-up to my substrate question... Is the washed and chopped tree fern fiber or osmunda fiber can be used or mix with the washed coco chunks as substrate for VFT?
Thanks much,
Gad
AnswerYes, osmunda fiber would probably be OK to use in a substrate (growing medium) for Venus Flytraps. However, such a growing medium should probably include at least some sphagnum peat moss or coir (carefully and completely desalinated coir), and should include some inorganic matter (about 50%) to displace the water retentive ingredients and cause the mix to dry at an acceptable rate to avoid fungal and bacterial infections, rot, and possible death of the plants.
Venus Flytraps' natural environment is sandy, with a water table that is high but not to the surface, typically grassy savannahs and pine barrens. Venus Flytraps are _not_ a bog or swamp plant, although they can and often do grow near (but usually not in) bogs. They are usually a little higher than the water table, and appreciate being grown moist, not wet all the time.
