QuestionI have reserved a Nepenthes truncata 'Queen of Hearts' x 'King of Spades' for shipping in mid March, and I have a question about its care.
It will be growing in an eastern window with about three hours of direct morning sun (tampering off around eleven A.M.), and bright light the rest of the day. It is also going to be supplemented with a 48watt 2ft 2 bulb t5 fixture with a lumen output of 4,000. Temperatures will be in the mid 70's with drops into the mid 60's on winter nights. I have recorded relative humidity at 35% in the winter, and 45-50% in the summer.
My questions are as follows:
--Can I grow this form of N. truncata in these conditions?
--Is that too much light for a 1.5 inch seedling? (and if so how far away should the fixture be.)
--Are you planning on getting one for your collection?
As always, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my rookie questions. I hope to be able to send you some pictures of its progress in the coming months, and years.
AnswerHi Connor,
Despite how beautiful and exotic this plant looks, it's still just a Nepenthes truncata, so your conditions should be just fine. My only added recommendation is to be careful with the T-5 lights since they are fairly warm. Start with them being about 8" from the plant, especially since you have it in a window. Also, find out how the plant has been treated before you get it. You may need to keep it in elevated humidity for a couple weeks, then harden it off. If you need to keep it in an enclosure be cautious not to have it in direct sun until you have harden it off.
We actually have quite a few of these, but we are growing them out before putting them up for sale.
Good Growing!
