S. purpurea venosa and S. rosea

Question
Hi, I live in zone 7 in Walnut Cove, NC. I'm getting a S.purpurea venosa soon and plan on eventually getting a S.rosea as well. Can their leaves be cut back like other sarracenia for winter dormancy or should they be left alone like S.purpurea purpurea and S.psittacina? Thanks!

Daniel Bunton

Answer
Hi Daniel,

S. purpurea venosa and rosea tend to loose some of their leaves during the winter.  I will try to selectively cut off browning leaves, but leave good ones.  Sometimes venosa will get very dense mats of leaves tightly enter-twined.  I will cut plants like that back entirely.

Good Growing!
