QuestionI was wondering if there is any way to re-use the old soil. I've heard people using coffee to put acidity in the soil for house plants. In your expert advice would it work if I treated the old soil with coffee to bring the acidity up?
AnswerHi Derek,
This would increase acidity, but it would also increase nitrogen which would be detrimental to most carnivores. The exception would be Nepenthes. Some growers do add a little coffee grounds to their soil mixes, or actually water their plants with coffee. Here's a discussion on that: http://icps.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=news&action=display&thread=2097&page=2 Like many things, however, it might be worth trying on a few plants to see how they respond. Sarracenia would be good candidates. Otherwise, once peat moss breaks down it starts having negative properties. It's just best to compost it rather than trying to re-use it.
Good Growing!
