QuestionHi, i recently bought a drosera adelea from Lowe's. Rght now i'm acclimating it from its "death cube". I bought a 100w bright light flourescent bulb. I was wondering if this is too bright and if not, how far away from the plant should i place the light? I live in Chattanooga,TN. For now I've been leaving it in a south facing window from 7 in the morning to 7 at night.
AnswerHi Dakota,
When you say you have a 100-watt fluorescent bulb, do you mean in equivalent or actual output? This makes a big difference because 100 watts in equivalent output is only 27 watts in actual output. This often isn't strong enough for carnivorous plants. But since you already have the plant in a south window, you might not need the light source at all.
I keep a Drosera adelae in my south window, and I don't use any supplemental light. It's been growing beautifully in that window for the past 2-3 years. I've already divided the plant once and will need to divide it again in the near future.
If you want to provide supplemental light, keep the light source about 8 inches above the plant. If the leaves grow excessively red, you may need to increase the distance or turn off the supplemental light altogether.
