leave carnivorous plants in water in winter.

Question
Hi,,, I live in a apt building with a nice backyard that i look after, I would like to know if i have to leave my S. oreophile/ S. leucophylla and S. minor tray of water in the winter time ? or take them out of water and use mulch and cover them up because of the snow we get in Toronto, Ont. Canada... My first time growing them in my backyard. Lg plants in 10" pots.... Thank's Mark...

Answer
Hi Mark,

Mulching is the simplest and safest method for over wintering temperate plants.  Keep them in their water trays and apply the mulch over the plants and pots.  There are several steps you need to follow, however, to ensure that your plants make it through winter OK.  If you're already familiar with over wintering container plants in your region, then you can simply follow the same procedure with your carnivorous plants.  Otherwise, watch our DVD, Grow Carnivorous Plants Volume 1.  We devote an entire segment to this issue.
