Plants in Brooklyn, NY

Question
Hello,

I live in Brooklyn, NY and I have the following plants, all growing together in a sort of troth pot. They live outside and I use the soil I bought directly from you guys.

- D. filiformis ssp. filiformis - Northern Dewthread
- Scarlet Belle
- Clamshell Flytrap
- S. purpurea ssp. venosa - Purple Pitcher
- Red Dragon Flytrap

I'm wondering if I need to worry about keeping these plants outside for the winter. I know the fly traps are tough little plants and can make it though, but what about the rest? (especially because they are all potted together)
My Northern Dewthread is looking terrible, and I fear it may have died.
Up here in New York we definitely  see some snow, cold temps and wind. Any advice?

Thank you in advance for all your help!
You guys are wonderful, and I absolutely love my plants :]

Answer
Hi Michelle,

All of those plants are North American plants, and they will do just fine outdoors.  At our nursery in Oregon, we grow these plants strictly outdoors.  However, as container plants, you will need to provide winter protection from cold freezing wind.

As with all temperate plants, these plants will go dormant when the weather gets cold.  Hence, the leaves will brown up or die back.  This is especially true with the dewthread.  While it may look dead, it's likely dormant.

For a basic idea about winter care, read our care sheet on our main website:

For more details about winter care, I highly recommend watching our DVD, Grow Carnivorous Plants Volume 1.  We demonstrate the steps required for winter care.

If you haven't done so yet, also watch our video podcast for November.  You can see what these plants will typically look like at this time of the year.

Good growing!
