QuestionI received a Nepenthes rajah plant with sphagnum wrapped around the stem. There is about a 3 inch length of stem with dead leaf remnants trimmed off between the crown of green leaves and the start of the roots. Should I plant it so the medium comes up to the bottom of the live leaves or should I plant it higher, exposing the dark stem and dead leaf bits. Will it root out from the stem if I plant it deeper?
AnswerHi Rob,
This is usually a judgment call on the grower. Personally, I prefer to bury as much of the older stem as I can, especially if the stem is still green. It doesn't harm the plant doing so, and it provides some extra stability.
Whether or not the buried stem produces roots depends on the age of the stem. If it's a bit older and has developed a hard bark, it most likely won't develop any roots. If the stem is still green, there is chance it'll eventually root.
Good growing!
