Dosera Spatulata

Question

Drosera Spatulata
I recently recevied a Dosera Spatulata fron you guys at Sarricenia Northwest. When it arivved it was in perfect condition, and for about 3 weeks it looked wonderful. Just a few day ago though the plantlets look spinilly and started to blacken. They have been in a west window sitting in a tray of water about a 1/4 inch high up the pot. It has flower stalks that are jsut about over with flowering except for a late stalk. The past week and a half though it has been rather cold outside and the window is a little cold and the window has been a little big cold. I have several other sundews, piguicula, and nepenthes in the same window and the only one that I am having trouble with is a lance leaf with browning around the deges of older leaves, if that helps. Thanks Levi.

Answer
Hi Levi,

Your plant needs more light.  In fact, all of your sundews need more light.  From what I could see of your lance leaf sundew, it's void of red pigments.  Ideally it should have just a tinge of red in the leaves.  I don't see any.  Same thing with your spoon leaf sundew.  It should be slightly red.  When it's green and spindly, the light levels are too low.

I noticed that you have a shade over your window.  Even though your plants are in a west window, the shade is blocking too much of the sunlight.  While you might think the plants are getting lots of bright light, in the end, your plants are always the final judge about what's bright enough.  In this case, they're showing suns of poor lighting conditions.  So I recommend opening the shade so your plants could get more sunlight.  Within a month, your plants will develop some red pigments.

Good growing!
