QuestionI heard that you could grow nepenthes like N.raja in Denver Colorado. Is this true because it's not that humid outside and if it is true what would I do in the winter when it's snowing?
AnswerHi Ben,
It's a matter of what you're willing to invest to grow this species. There is a grower in Colorado who grows Nepenthes rajah, and he does so in a climate-controlled greenhouse. At my nursery, I have a greenhouse filled with highland Nepenthes, and I heat the greenhouse in winter and cool it down in summer. For some of the finicky species, such as Nepenthes rajah, I grow them under automated misters.
So the question to ask yourself is, "What are you willing to invest to successfully grow this species?"
If a climate-controlled greenhouse isn't feasible, then I strongly suggest growing some of the easier species, such as Nepenthes sanguinea and Nepenthes truncata. Both of these species grow very well as regular houseplants as long as you can remember to keep the soil moist at all times and that you have a sunny windowsill.
