Question
Nepenthe Veitchii
Hi,
I bought a N. Veitchii and was wondering if this species is a lowland, intermediate or highland pitcher plant, if it matters if I want to grow it as a houseplant, and if it will do okay as a windowsill plant? I am especially concerned about humidity levels since i will be moving to Beijing (it has a dry climate from October to May), and cannot afford to set up a terrarium or grow room. Will it be alright with the occasional misting? Will it still pitcher?
Thanks,
Patrick
AnswerHi Patrick,
N. veitchii has both highland and lowland forms, and is a fairly common plant in Borneo. Chances are it will do just fine as a bright windowsill plant. You just need to give it time and let it adapt once you move. Like most Nepenthes, and most cp in general, light will be far more important than humidity. Beijing is very likely to be more humid than your current location depending on where you live in Canada. If you find that the humidity is very low, put the plant on a large pebble tray. Don't worry about misting. That's an old myth about growing houseplants. The misting can often do more harm than good. A once a month washing of the plant can be beneficial to remove dust.
