Questionso im fairly new to growing carnivorous plants. like many people i have tried the Venus Fly Traps you find in mini terrariums with no luck. im looking to get some sort of Sarracenia that I can grow in my local area. Just wondering what you would recommend. I live in north east iowa.
I would also like to know if there are any that grow wild in my area. If there r what are the best kind of places to find them? Im just curious because im a photographer and would like to photograph them in the wild.
thanks in advance for any advice.
Wes
AnswerHi Wes,
You would be very successful with any of the Sarracenia species. You would also have good luck with Venus flytraps once you know the correct method of growing them. Your problem in the past has probably been the cubes. Those plants are weak to start with, and if you follow the directions on the label, I guarantee your plant will die. Visit our caresheet pages to get a better understanding of North American CP care. http://www.cobraplant.com/caresheets Also consider our DVD, "Grow Carnivorous Plants, volume 1".
I don't know of any locations for native carnivorous plants in Iowa. Further north in Michigan several location exist around the great lakes. If you look at some of the webpages of National Forests you may be able to find some bog locations with cp present.
Good Growing!
