deer resistant

Question
Not really a vital question, but after just watching your podcast on Darlingtonia I am wondering if carnivorous plants are deer resistant? (Any and all carnivorous plants)

Answer
Hi Matt,

Funny that you mention this.  A nickname for Darlingtonia is "Deer Lick".  The plants always put up one or two leaves when they first start growing in spring that are much taller than the rest of the pitchers they produce.  It's theorized that these are to attract the deer to eat as to avoid the shorter pitchers.  In any case, most pitcher plants, Darlingtonia or Sarracenia tend to taste really bad, so herbivores don't eat much if they sample.  Deer are also browsers, so they eat a little of this and a little of that.  It helps them to avoid being poisoned by some plants.  (I've personally seen deer eat Elderberry leaves, which are quite toxic.)  On the east coast I've seen plenty of pictures of Sarracenia flava left alone in cow pastures since the cattle don't like their taste.

Good Growing!
