Question
Hello! I was planning on re-potting my drosera regia. The pot it's in right
now seems kind of small for it. I was reading some of your guys' answers for
other ppl and confused myself with trying to figure out what would work for
my area. I live in southern California. Zone 9. Our nights here normally drop
to the low 60's in the summer, so im not to worried about the temperature
drop at night. What would you recommend the soil mix to be? I have had
good luck with growing darlingtonia californica outside. And i read
somewhere that drosera regia can grow in full sun. Would you guys
recommend it? What kind of pot should i use? Our summer days do get pretty
hot sometimes. Should i go with a tall white plastic pot or a tall terra cotta
pot? Finally, should i have the pot sitting in water or should i water it every
night like i do with my darlingtonia? The way i care for my regia right now is,
i water it every other day, over head, and i keep it along with my nepenthes
in partial sun, around 3-4 hours of direct morning sun. Thank you guys for
any help you can give me.

Hi Manny,

With D. regia, go big.  The King likes big pots.  Go for a large white plastic pot.  Give it about a 12" pot.  Your growing conditions sound great.  You can definitely grow it outside in full sun.  Go for a soil mix of equal parts peat, perlite and pumice.  If you can't fine pumice, go for two parts perlite to one part peat moss.  They like a loose media.  When watering, have a tray under it, but only keep a small amount of water in the tray.  Always top-water the pot.  They like the circulation, and prefer to not be too wet.  Finally, when you repot, be very gentle with the roots.  D. regia is a little more sensitive to transplanting than other sundews.  When your plant is big send us a photo.
