QuestionI just bought a Tropical pitcher plant and the leaves on the pitche wont open and i cant seem to find much care info on how much sun to give it and howmuch water to give it can i have some tips?
AnswerHello Ryan,
Tropical Pitcher Plants, or Nepenthes, do not require full sun and do not like as much water as North American carnivorous plants like Sarracenias do. Keep the Nepenthes in slight shading like under a tree or in a place where it will get partial light throughout the day with primarily morning and evening sunlight. Give the plant enough water to keep its soil moist all the time while ensuring that it has no water standing under the pot. Just let a little water drain out into the tray and stop watering. Give it more water every 2-3 days.
The pitchers take time to develop. If several weeks go by with no sign of further development in the tendrils on the plant it may need more light or an increase in humidity. Many species of Nepenthes can adapt readily to lower humidity levels if given enough time to slowly acclimate to those lower levels with easy small changes over time. The usual way to do this with a plant is to place a clear bag over it and punch several 1/4 inch holes in the bag every three days until the bag no longer holds humidity after 2 or so weeks and can be removed.
