Alata getting brown leaf tips

Question

ventrata
I've had a large DeRoose alata for almost a year. Actually, its like 5 plants in
one pot I think. Its been growing leaves and getting taller, but won't produce
any pitchers for me. The tips of the leaves are turning brown, see photo. Any
ideas on why thats happening with the leaves and how to get some pitchers
out of it?

I water it twice a week, and it gets 4 hours direct sun from a SW window that
it shares with a ventricosa, miranda, copelandii and a veitchi hybrid (all of
which get same water and sun and have been producing pitchers).

Answer
Hi Katie,

Thank you for submitting the photograph.  This helps me out a lot.  While it's normal for older leaves to turn brown, when it occurs on newer leaves, this usually indicates that something is amiss in the soil.  The soil could be breaking down, which will change its properties and promote bacteria growth and root rot.

Repot the plant in fresh media.  You can use the media mix that we have on our website, or you can make your own.  Regardless of what you use, the soil needs to have lots of drainage.  Read the care sheet on our main website for information about Nepenthes soil:
