PROPAGATION OF SARRACENIA BY USING DEAD LEAF PULLINGS

Question
THE OTHER DAY I WAS PULLING OFF  THE DEAD LEAVES THAT HAD FORMED AROUND MY SARRACENIAS WHEN I NOTICED ONE HAD A ROOT COMING OUT OF IT AND A FEW OTHERS HAD A BIT OF RHIZOME ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DEAD LEAF. I PLANT THEM IN A CARNIVOROUS PLANT MIX BUT I WAS WONDERING IF THEY WILL GROW SINCE THEY HAD SOME RHIZOME ON THEM? HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?

Answer
Hi Lachlan,

Most likely not.  The leaf needs to be alive and have lots of green in it for photosynthesis.  If the leaf can't perform photosynthesis, it won't have the energy to sustain itself, much less produce new roots.

Not all Sarracenia species propagate via leaf pullings either.  Sarracenia purpurea and Sarracenia psittacina are the best candidates for leaf pullings.  Strike rate is about 50%.  The other species don't respond to leaf pullings.

Good growing!
