QuestionHello, I've just bought a mister/spray bottle from a local pet store. It is made for terrariums. It consists of a regular spray bottle with a hand pump. After filling, all is needed is a few pumps and water can mist the terrarium for HOURS. Here is the site with a picture: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18320 I was thinking of putting heliamphora in teh middle of the terrarium and surrounded by smaller overly waterlogged pots of sphagnum moss. After the heavy misting the terrarium's enclosure keeps the humidity higher than usual and extra moisture is captured by the sphagnum moss pots. At night, evaporative cooling from the mosses keep the terrarium at a reasonably cool temperature. What do you think of this system?
AnswerHi Taylor,
The idea of a terrarium is to keep the humidity at a consistent level throughout the day. As long as you have a terrarium, you don't need a misting system. I've successfully grown Heliamphfora in an enclosure without needing to mist at all. From your description of your setup, the extra humidity from the sphagnum moss will keep the humidity slightly higher. My setup was more basic than yours. I simply placed the plant in a glass aquarium with strong fluorescent lights over head. Nothing fancy at all, but it did the job beautifully.
With that said, you won't harm your plant by misting it in the terrarium. I just think that it's not at all necessary. Save your money to buy more plants instead!
Good growing!
