Robins pulling up newly emerging flytraps from dormancy.

Question
Hi Jeff & Jacob,

I have this problem every spring with robins pulling up newly emerging flytraps that are coming out of dormancy. Robins are notorious for probing the soil looking for earthworms during the spring and summer months, and potted plants are no exception. I have observed a robin pulling up a Venus flytrap from the soil and dropping it in the water tray as they continue to look for food. I have tried
different methods to stop this pillaging such as plastic mesh, clear lexan sheets, and mylar flash tape. It would probably be safe to say that this pulling up of a Venus flytrap from its soil severely weakens the plant as it is emerging out of dormancy. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.
Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,

A BB gun works well.  Have you tried bird netting?  You'll need to prop the netting so it's several inches above the plant.  Another option is to bring your plant into a very sunny windowsill until early summer.  Usually the birds stop this behavior when more bugs emerge.

Good growing!
