QuestionFirst I just received sarracenia Daina's delight and it is flowering however have nothing else flowering. I was wondering if it can be self pollinated or is it sterile like the judith hindle.
Also I over wintered my plants here in Iowa (zone 5) in a cooler with packaging peanuts in the garage. I sprayed them with sulfur based fungicide as well. All of my plants (VFT, Rubra, scarlet belle, purperea, judith hindle)seemed to come out fine as the roots where white with hard rhizome and no loss of color however the leucophylla tarnok had much of the rhizome turn brown with the rhizome softer but there are 1-2 growth points that still look healthy but was curious why 3/4 of the plant looks dead. The roots were also not nearly as white as they were more tannish brown. Another things is that I kept them in there pots vs bare root and noticed that the soil was wet vs moist and was wondering if this could be the cause. Last question even though it is months away what is the best way to store plants bare root (collecting to many plants).
Thanks for your help
Chad
AnswerHi Chad,
Congratulations on successfully overwintering your plants! Even with the loss of the Tarnok, all of your other Sarracenia came through just fine. Oddly enough, we too will sometimes lose a leucophylla over the winter. We don't know why, but over the years we've noticed that this particular species is prone to fungus during the winter months. Other growers have remarked that if they lose a Sarracenia it's almost always a leucophylla.
For now, unpot the plant and clip off the dead portions of the rhizome. Spray the rhizome heavily with a sulfur fungicide and repot in fresh soil. That's the most you can do at this point.
With your Dana's Delight, you can pollinate it with its own pollen. Judith Hindle is also viable. We've collected seeds from that plant in the past. The only flower that is sterile is Tarnok.
You can also store your bare root rhizomes in the refrigerator. The technique is a bit too extensive to cover in this format, and we discuss it in our ebook, http://www.cobraplant.com/ebook
Good growing!
