smell

Question
I just had to re-pot my carnivorous plants because the
cheep pots cracked, and they were kind of on the short side
anyway and i wanted more room for roots...ANYWHO..as i was
gently lifting them out of their existing pots i noticed an
odor similar to like compost or manure..I know these are
bog plants and are always wet so the smell is prob
normal..but since i am new to all of this i figure it cant
hurt to ask. is the smell normal? I am using a peatmoss,
sand, pumice mix..(but my next mix will have no sand.just
60% pumice 40% peatmoss)

Answer
Hi Matt,

The soil shouldn't have any smell.  If it smells like manure, the peat moss may have been harvested from a pasture.  If it smells like rotten eggs, the soil is infected with bacteria.  In either case, you should change the soil.

Good growing!
