QuestionHi! I'm going to start trying to grow some live Sphagnum moss like you said on the website, and I have a few questions. Can I use a metal pan for the water scaucer? I think it's made of aluminum. Will it be harmful to the sphagnum? Also, can I put the container under growlights? They're 4 foot flourescents. Thank you for your help!
AnswerHi Aslan,
I haven't experimented with growing live sphagnum as you've described. I've only grown it outdoors.
Because you're going to create an acidic environment, avoid using a metal pan. Though relatively weak, the acid in peat moss will eventually corrode the metal. Use plastic instead.
As far as grow lights, that depends on your temperatures. Sphagnum moss does NOT like constant warm temperatures. While constant moisture will help keep the moss cool, you'll need to pay attention to overheating. Many growers find that sphagnum moss doesn't grow well in greenhouses. Grow the moss outdoors whenever possible.
Good growing!
