QuestionI found these tiny bugs on my White top pitcher plant. They
are so tiny i have trouble seeing them through a magnifying glass. I noticed these red liquid spots on the leaves and
it looks like my plant is bleeding. This red liquid it a
little sticky and then found that the insects were the ones
producing it. Because I noticed the liquid coming out from
there rear, I thought they were aphids but didn't know they
could be that small and release red honeydew. I took them
off using a dilute solution of alcohol and a q-tip. How can
I know I got rid of these insects and prevent them from
returning. Thank You
AnswerHi Edward,
Yes, that's a strange one! I don't think I've heard of this pest, but it could be a species of aphid. There are over 100 species, so it's possible you found that actually feasts on adult pitcher.
The best method to prevent future attacks of aphids is spraying your plants with a systemic insecticide. We use Systemic Insect Killer by Ortho? Most systemics are safe to use on Sarracenia. Follow the directions provided by the manufacturer.
The insecticide should last for 3-4 weeks. You may need to apply it twice in spring. By summer, the aphids tend to move on to other plants.
Good growing!
